Clayton County Register, Thur., 29 Sept. 1927.
This community and vicinity was shocked last Saturday morning when word was passed around that James Sullivan had died suddenly the night before at about eleven-thirty. "Jim", as he was familiarly known by his friends, was apparently in usual health during the day and the sudden death was therefore a greater shock. Although Mr. Sullivan had not enjoyed his usual good health for the past three or four weeks, this condition was not generally known.
James Sullivan was born in Cox Creek township, one and one=fourth mile west of Littleport, December 18, 1864, and it was there that he spent the greater part of his life, following the occupation of a farmer. About ten years ago he rented his farm and removed to Elkader, which has been his home ever since. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Sullivan and was one of five children, his father and mother and one brother and three sisters have preceded him in death.
Mr. Sullivan never married, but his passing is mourned by five nieces and three nephews, as follows: Miss Nellie Liddy, of Libby, Mont.; Mrs. Thos. Stevens of Dubuque; Mrs. Geo. Jones of Chicago; Miss Josephine Enright of Milwaukee; and Miss Margaret Enright of Chicago; Emmett Liddy of Elkader; Ray Liddy of Helena, Montana; and John Enright of Chicago.
Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church here, of which he was a member, Tuesday morning at ten o'clock, with Rev. J. P. Taken of Elkader, Rev. Goetzinger of Garber, and Rev. Hosefeld of McGregor, officiating clergymen. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Littleport.
Mr. Sullivan counted his friends by the score and to many of these he proved a friend indeed and by these he will be missed.
