Michael O'Brien, a life long resident of Cox Creek, died at Chariton, Iowa, Monday morning at five o'clock, Sept. 4th, 1927. The news of Mr. O'Brien's death came as a surprise to his relatives and friends although he had been ill for three weeks his condition was not considered serious. On Aug. 31st, he went to the hospital at Chariton for treatment, where on Sunday evening he suffered a sudden change for the worse and passed away the next morning. Michael O'Brien was born at Cox Creek, Mar. 25th, 1869, and on Nov. 27., 1900, was united in marriage to Catherine Henry, also of Cox Creek. To this union were born four children, Marcus and Catherine at home, Helen and Harriet students at St. Joseph's training school at Mason City. Besides his bereaved wife and children he leaves to mourn his loss two brothers, James and John O'Brien of Cox Creek, and three sisters, Mrs. Austin Thyne of Cox Creek, Mrs. Earl Stainaker of Strawberry Point, and Miss Nellie O'Brien of Oelwein. With the death of Michael O'Brien the Cox Creek community mourns the loss of one of its most prominent and respected citizens. A lover of his home he was ever solicitous for the happiness and contentment of his family. All who knew him found him upright, courteous and kind, a type of man who brought honor to his calling and made farm life worth while and attractive. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart church and a ready supporter of every thing that advanced the interest of religion. The funeral was held from Sacred Heart church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. The large concourse of friends that crowded the church gave evidence of the high esteem in which deceased was held. A solemn requiem mass was sung by Father Murtagh of Edgewood. Father Hetherington of Volga was deacon and Father Bowen, sub deacon, assisted by James and Philip Ivory, alter boys, cousins of the deceased. At the close of the services a hymn was sung by Mrs. Marvin Berns and Frank Quinlan with Mrs. Ed. Quinn at the organ. The casket bearers were Larry Quinn, Arthur Dittmer, William Byrnes, Francis Balluff, John McDemott, and Joe McTaggart. Interment took place in Sacred Heart cemetery. Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Michael Fagan, Miss Frances Fagan, John McNamara, all of Monticello; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. O'Brien, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. O'Brien and W. J. Ivory, all of Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kenna and Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Carr, all of Manchester; Mr. and Mrs. James Carr, Mrs. Rueben Carr, Mrs. D. J. Kenna, John Kenna, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kash and Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Carr, all of Lamont; and Mrs. Jennie Behrens of New Hampton; also many from the surrounding towns.
