Clayton County Register, Thur., 08 Sept. 1927. Elgin column.
Magdalena Garber* died at her home on Pleasant Street Saturday afternoon, September 3, at two o'clock. She would have been 88 years old in December.
Mrs. Garber was born December 24, 1839, at Langnan, Canton Bern, Switzerland. She came to America in May, 1876, and was married to Peter Garber in July, 1877. He died July 5, 1887. They were the parents of a large family, four of whom are living. Two daughters, Mrs. Mary Frieden of Lamar, Mo., and Rose, who has been her mother's companion and faithful nurse and lives at home. The two step-sons are Joe P. of Caldwell, Idaho, Ben of Blunt, S. Dak. There are four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. On April twenty-six of the present year, Mrs. Garber had a fall and injured her hip. She was compelled to go to her bed as a result of the fall and has been steadily failing since that time. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon from the Apostolic church east of Elgin and interment will be made in the cemetery nearby. Mrs. Garber was a pioneer mother and practically spent the greater part of her life on a farm in Clayton county, where hard labor to rear the family was her lot. When retiring from the farm she moved to Elgin and with her daughter Rose occupied her cottage on Pleasant Street for many years, always busying herself with whatever work her hands could find to do. She was steadfast in purpose and loyal and honest and leaves a heritage of good deeds to bless her memory.
