Clayton County Register, Thur., 07 April 1927. Guttenberg column.

James T. Howard, a former, highly respected resident of this community, passed away at his home in Boise, Idaho, on Tuesday of last week at the age of 73 years and one day, after an illness of a long duration. Deceased was born at Elizabeth, Ill., on March 28, 1854, where he grew to young manhood. A number of years ago he came to Guttenberg to reside and was employed as a carpenter by the C.M. & St. Paul R.R. Co., with a bridge builders crew. He was married in Clayton township 43 years ago to Miss Alice Brown. He was successfully engaged in farming in Clayton, and also resided at Clayton and Savanna, Ill., for a time. Twenty-seven years ago he and his family left this community and went to Emmetsburg, Iowa, to reside, later going to Boise, Idaho, to make their home, where deceased spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Howland was a faithful member of Guttenberg Lodge No. 126, I.O.O.F. and was an ambitious man during his entire life. He was a kind and true husband, father and brother. His greatest pleasure in life at all times was to do acts of kindness for those endeared to him. During his illness he was a patient sufferer and had hopes for recovery until the Angel of Death called him to the Great Beyond. All was done for him that could be done to save his life, but all to no avail. His death is deeply mourned by his widow: three sons, Charles of Salt Lake City, Utah, Frank and Albert of Boise, Idaho; one daughter, Ruth, of Boise, Idaho; one sister, Mrs. C. Mitchell, of Ottumwa, Iowa; and numerous other relatives and friends, by whom this good and true man will be sadly missed. One daughter has preceded the father in death. The body was brought to Guttenberg for burial, arriving here on Saturday evening and was taken to the Oddfellow Hall in this city, where funeral services were conducted by the Oddfellow Order and Rev. D. D. Welch, on Sunday afternoon. The body was laid to rest in the City cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near.

Notes: The surname Howard / Howland was spelled both ways in the obit. Surname in the cemetery records is Howland.
