Clayton County Register, Thur., 24 Mar. 1927. Guttenberg column.
Fred Thiese, a former long-time highly regarded resident of this community, but of late residing on a farm near Arlington, Iowa, committed suicide early on Wednesday morning of last week by hanging himself in the barn on his farm. No cause for the act is known. Mr. Thiese arose about five o'clock on the morning he committed suicide, but did not call his hired man, Henry Troester, as was his custom. About six o'clock the same morning Mr. Troester, the hired man, found the lifeless body of Fred Thiese hanging from a ladder in the barn. Fred Thiese was born on a farm in Jefferson township, Clayton County Iowa, on June 2, 1879, and therefore was 47 years, nine months and 13 days of age at the time of his death. The greater part of his life was spent in this community. On February 27, 1927, he was married in Clayton township to Miss Alma Bruening, of Volga City. After their marriage the couple went to housekeeping on a farm near Arlington. Mr. Thiese was an ambitious man during his entire life, and was of a pleasing personality, and the word of his death came as a shock to all in this community. He was a member of the Lutheran church. Mr. Thiese's health had been failing him for some time previous to his death. His untimely death is mourned by his widow; four brothers, Ferdinand, Herman and Otto Thiese, of Clayton township, and George Thiese of Jefferson township; two sisters, Mrs. Fred L. Miller of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Katherine Bergman of Rockwell, Iowa, and numerous other relatives and friends, who will all sadly miss him. The body was brought to Guttenberg for burial on Friday afternoon and laid to rest in the City Cemetery. Rev. Emil Lehne of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church of this city conducted the funeral services. The funeral was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near.
