Henry Aulwes, one of this communities highly respected pioneer residents, passed away at his home in Jefferson township, on Friday morning at the age of 85 years, seven months and seven days, after a short illness. The cause of his death was mostly due to old age. The deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, on August 11, 1841. When one year of age he came to America with his parents, settling at Cincinnati, Ohio, for a short time, then coming to Iowa and settling on a farm in Jefferson township, Clayton County, Iowa, where the remainder of his ambitious life was spent. He was united in marriage with Miss Mary Schroeder at Guttenberg. His wife preceded him in death on April 25, 1907. For a number of years Mr. Aulwes had been making his home with his son, Helmuth and family, in this township, where he always received the tenderest of care. Mr. Aulwes was a kind and true father, brother and friend and an upright citizen in every respect. To know him was to like him. His greatest pleasure in life at all times was to do acts of kindness for those endeared to him. , by whom his memories will be forever cherished. His death is deeply mourned by one son, Helmuth Aulwes of Jefferson township; two daughters, Mrs. August Homan of Guttenberg, and Mrs. August Morarend of Jefferson township; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Joseph Menges of Arlington; and numerous other relatives and friends by whom this good and true man will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at the Helmuth Aulwes home in Jefferson township on Sunday afternoon, Rev. K. Wm. Braun of Garnavillo officiating. The body was laid to rest in the City Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.
