Clayton County Register, Thur., 17 Feb. 1927.
Residents of Elkader and vicinity were deeply shocked yesterday afternoon when word was passed about that Herman Rohwedder had died suddenly, following a stroke, at 12:15, in the Rohwedder & Katz meat market. Mr. Rohwedder had been in the country during the morning buying cattle for the market and had returned about 10:30 in his usual health. Just about noon, he prepared to go to dinner and as he passed through one of the rear rooms of the market he was attacked by the fatal stroke and died before help could be called, although two doctors were summoned at once.
Herman Wilhelm Karl Rohwedder was born in Clayton township, near Garnavillo, April 9th, 1881, the son of Frank and Caroline (Fuhr) Rohwedder and was confirmed at Garnavillo, April 14th, 1895. He reached the age of forty-four years, ten months and seven days.
March 18th, 1909, deceased was united in marriage at Farmersburg with Miss Minnie Stade and to this union three children were born, two of whom, together with the widow, survive, Melva and Harlan, one child having died in infancy. His mother also preceded him in death two years ago. Besides these already named Mr. Rohwedder is survived by his aged father, of near Garnavillo, two brothers and six sisters as follows:
Mrs. William Duwe, Postville; Henry Rohwedder, near Garnavillo; Mrs. Henry Schaefer, Emery, S. Dakota; Mrs. Mary Stade, Farmersburg; Louis Rohwedder, near Garnavillo; Mrs. Hugo Harberg, near Garnavillo; Mrs. Wm. Dettman, McGregor; Mabel Rohwedder, near Garnavillo.
Following their marriage at Farmersburg, Mr. and Mrs. Rohwedder resided on a farm near Garnavillo, and then for two years on a farm near Communia, after which, on February 1st, 1920, they moved to Elkader, where Mr. Rohwedder purchased the Ayrshire Dairy and which he has conducted successfully since February 10th, the same year.
Mr. Rohwedder has been prominent in dairy circles, largely because of the excellent type of cattle he has used in his herd. He was a home man, but still found time for community activities and was ever ready to help where help was needed. He was a Modern Woodman and active in the body and in theses activities he will be missed. In the home, however, the loss is the greatest and a space will be left vacant there, which can never again be filled. The family has the deepest sympathy of the entire community.
Funeral services will be held from the home next Sunday afternoon at 1:30 and from the Evangelical church at 2:00, after which interment will be made in the East Side cemetery, with Rev. C. H. Franke officiating.
