Clayton County Register, Thur., 03 Feb. 1927.
William George Freitag was born April 8, 1867, in Jefferson township. He was confirmed at St John's Lutheran church at Garnavillo. He grew to manhood on a farm near Guttenberg. On February 28, 1889, he was united in marriage to Mary Sieg, at Garnavillo. Nine children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. Ever since his marriage he has lived on a farm in Volga township, where he made his home for about forty years.
Mr. Freitag enjoyed good health until about a year and a half ago, when he complained about trouble with his stomach. Some time ago he went to Iowa City for medical aid. He remained at the hospital for four weeks, but the verdict of the doctors was not encouraging. The disease was too far advanced to yield to medical treatment. He passed away quietly on January 17, at about nine o'clock in the evening. He leaves to mourn his death eight children: Martha, Mrs. Henry Wittman, Lake Lillian, Minnesota; Evelyn, Mrs. Wm. Pisel, Kindelville, Indiana; Malinda, Mrs. Emil Zitterguen, Volga township; Elsie, Mrs. Herman Kruse, Read township; and Ida, Marie and Glendor, still at home.; ten grandchildren, three brothers, Henry in Read township, Fred, in Mason City, and John, in Kensett, Iowa; one sister, Mary Rodenberg of Jefferson township; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held January 19th, at Garnavillo, Rev. K. Wm. Braun officiating.
(Note: Although the obit says he is survived by 8 children, only 7 were named.)
