OBITUARY

Friederich Moritz Kleinhans was born in Hanover, Germany, on Nov. 12th, 1827. He came to New York in 1847, and the following year returned to Germany to bring his parents to this country. After living several years at New York, he moved to Galena, Ill., and from there to Guttenberg. In 1870 he married Mrs. Mary Backus and moved to Clayton. One daughter was born to them, who preceded the parents in death 15 years ago. Mrs. Kleinhans died four years ago at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Kuempel, at Charles City. The declining years of his life were spent at Clayton, where he died on Saturday, Oct. 26th. The funeral was held at Guttenberg Monday, Oct. 28th, Rev. K. Wm. Braun of Garnavillo officiating. He leaves one brother, Herman Kleinhans, of San Jose, Calif., and one step-daughter, Mrs. Kuempel.

On Saturday, October 26, occurred the death of Frederick M. Kleinhans, of this city. Deceased was born in Hannover, Germany, November 12, 1827, which brings his age up to 84 years, 11 months and 14 days at the time of his death. In 1847 he came to New York, returning to Germany the following year, accompanying his parents back to New York the same year. After spending several years in New York he came west, accompanied by his parents, settling at Galena, Ill., and later on a farm near Guttenberg, where his parents died. In 1870 he came to Clayton, where he was united in marriage to Marie Backus. One daughter was born to this happy union, Miss Mary Kleinhans, who died at the age of 15 years. Four years ago his faithful wife passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Kuempel at Charles City. Mr. Kleinhans was a kind and loving husband and father and true friend and neighbor. he is survived by his step-daughter, Mrs. Nellie Kuempel, and one brother, Herman Kleinhans, at San Jose, Cal.

Frederick M. Kleinhaus [sic] died at Clayton Saturday October 26, aged 84 years, 11 months and 14 days. Mr. Kleinhaus had resided on a farm a mile south of Guttenberg many years and moved to Clayton in 1870 where he was married to Marie Backus. Their only daughter, Mary, died at the age of fifteen years. His wife died four years ago. He is survived by his step-daughter Mrs. Nellie Kuempel, at Charles City, and brother Herman Kleinhaus at San Jose, Cal. His body was brought to Guttenberg Monday and interment was made in the City cemetery. Those from Clayton who attended the funeral were Henry Pesch, H. C. Bothmer, C. D. Stearns, H. J. Luers, Chas. Crefeld, Henry Sharp, John Growney, Ed. Meder and Mrs. Meehan; from Charles City, Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Kuempel and family.
