Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 Nov. 1919.
The community was startled yesterday afternoon when it was learned that Fred C. Stahl had been found dead at his home south of Elkader. Charles Perry, a brother-in-law, who had been husking corn on a part of Mr. Stahl's farm went to the house to eat his lunch and there found that the death messenger had preceded him sometime during the night or early morning. We understand that Mr. Stahl had been in town the evening before apparently in his usual health. He was 63 years, 2 months and 11 days old.
Coroner Beerman was summoned and it was established that Mr. Stahl had died from a stroke of apoplexy.
Fred C. Stahl was the eldest son of Charles and Ernestine Stahl and was born on the ocean September 8, 1856, while his parents were on their way to America. They later settled on a farm in Boardman township in this county and here he grew to manhood.
After gaining his majority the attraction of the New West appealed to him strongly and not in vain. With others he went west to take part in the building of the great state, now known as South Dakota. He homesteaded a farm in Kingsbury county, the town of Oldham being later built on the adjoining quarter section. Here he labored and suffered all the vigors of frontier life for several years, seeing the broad sweep of prairie become dotted with homes and towns.
The desire to be near his relatives finally caused him to sell his holdings and come back to Elkader. After a short time he purchased a small farm west of town, where he lived for several years. He then sold this place and purchased the one south of town where he was living at the time of his death. He had never married.
He is survived by five brothers, August and Louis, of Cox Creek township; Mike of British Columbia, Canada; George and Edward, of Boardman township: two sisters, Mrs. D. C. Hale and Mrs. Emma Perry, of Elkader, together with other relatives and many friends. His parents, two sisters and two brothers have preceded him in death.
Mr. Stahl was a man of upright character, thoroughly respected by all who knew him, and he will be missed and mourned by a wide circle of friends.
The funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Evangelical church in Elkader, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment will be in the East Side cemetery.
