Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 13 Nov. 1919.

It was indeed a great shock for our entire community when the sad news became known that John W. Stoops, Jr., the subject of this sketch, had almost suddenly and without warning been called by death on Friday, Nov. 7th, at twenty minutes after three o'clock in the morning, after a brief illness of about ten days.

Mr. Stoops had been ailing somewhat prior to October 30th, when a doctor was called. His family and friends thought that it was a case of acute indigestion and that a short time with the tender care that was given him he would get over it, but those fond hopes and expectations were not to be realized. On Wednesday evening, Nov. 5th, peritonitis set in and his condition became alarming, a nurse was called and all that medical skill and loving care was able to do was done, but to no avail. In spite of the patient's remarkable resistive-power, the precious life slowly but surely ebbed away, surrounded by those who were near and dear to him, he at last closed his eyes in the last sleep, at the age of 33 years and 21 days.

He was born October 17th, 1886, in Boardman township, Clayton county, Iowa. On April 26th, 1906, he was married to Miss Bertha L. Hulverson, who now survives the beloved departed husband; while two sons, Malcolm, aged ten, and Burnell, six years old, will sadly miss their father in years to come.

The departed is also mourned by his father; one brother, Curtis, of Sanger, California; one sister, Mrs. Griswold, of Grundy Center, Iowa; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. Stoops has spent his whole life in and around Elkader, for a number of years he was engaged in farming, and later had charge of the Standard Oil Station, which position he gave up about a year ago, when he joined his father in the contract business. Because of his kind and cheerful disposition he will be sadly missed by his beloved ones in the home and by all that knew him.

Funeral services were held at the home and in the Congregational church, with Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.
