Laura L. Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Bachtell, was born in National, Clayton county, Iowa, May 4, 1857, and died at Park Hospital, Mason City, Iowa, Nov. 5. Since early spring she had been failing in health, but was not considered dangerously ill until Oct. 14. That day she was taken from her room at 214 14th St. N.W. to the hospital and grew rapidly worse until the end. Paralysis was the immediate cause of her death. Her remains were shipped to Elkader Thursday, Nov. 6th, accompanied by Mrs. Addie Hofer and son Raymond. They were taken to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Barnard and the funeral was held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. The body was buried in the East Side cemetery by the side of her father and mother. Rev. C. H. Franke conducted the services. Mrs. G. G. White and Mrs. G. H. Wilke sang two duets, accompanied by Miss Ella Wilke.
Mrs. Thompson has lived the most of her life in Clayton county. In 1858, with her parents she moved to their farm in Grand Meadow township and in 1871 they moved to Elkader. Here she lived through her girlhood and womanhood.
She married Joe Thompson in March 1876. Mr. Thompson died the winter of 1900, her mother passed away May 24, 1905, and her father in February, 1907. In the fall of 1908 deceased moved to Mason City and lived there until her death.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barnum, St. Olaf, Iowa; Mr. an Mrs. Chas. Bachtell, McGregor; Mrs. Carrie Bachtell, Postville; Mrs. Mary Miles and Mrs. Roy DeBow, Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. F. Nading, Strawberry Point, - all cousins of Mrs. Thompson.
