Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 9 Oct. 1919. Garnavillo column.
Fredena Kahlstorf was born Sept. 3, 1888, in Garnavillo, and met her death on Sept. 25, in her home in south St. Paul, Minn.
Deceased was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Joachim Kahlstorf.
She was married in 1903 to Christ Hamann of Hancock, Minn., after which they resided at Garnavillo several years. One son, William, was born to this union. After nine years they were divorced, the father taking the son. In 1914 she was married to John Swarz of St. Paul. This also proved a very unhappy marriage. After repeated threats of violence he finally carried them out and killed her by beating her with a shoemaker's lust and then hitting her over the head with an ax splitting her head nearly to the shoulders.
There are left to mourn her untimely death her father, Joachin Kahlstorf, one son William, one sister Mrs. Hy. Birnstengel, and one brother Henry, besides many other relatives.
The remains arrived here Monday morning and were taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Harnack. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from St. Paul's church, Rev. Brown officiating. She was laid to rest beside her mother in the old cemetery.
(Note: Her father's given name was spelled in the article as shown here.)
