Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 18 Sept. 1919. Read column.
Mrs. Dorothea Mahnke (Nee Hoth) was born Aug. 31, 1845, in Misso, province of Pommern, Germany. At 24 years of age, with her parents, she emigrated to America and settled in Read township. Her marriage to Joachim Mahnke occurred in 1869 and the young couple then settled on a farm in the immediate vicinity of Clayton Center. Here they stayed till 1899 when they removed to town. Her husband died in 1901. This union was blessed with 4 children, of which one died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Fred Koelke, August Mahnke and Mrs. John Kliefoth; one sister, Mrs. Johanna Baade, and one brother, Mr. John Hoth, also mourn her departure, with 24 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Her age was 74 years and 14 days. The funeral was held Wed., Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. from the home and in the church, Rev. Athenstadt officiating.
The deceased was a good and kind woman and as such she was loved and respected by all who knew her. One of the greatest pleasures of her life was to help others and even when the failings of old age crept upon her more and more she still was busy in the performance of neighborly tasks, almost until the last.
Mrs. Mahnke had been troubled by asthma in recent years and this developed into pneumonia and on Sunday afternoon, Sept 14, 1919, after a five day illness she passed away, to join the innumerable throng in the land from which no traveler returns, there to behold the towers and minarets of Emanuel's land.
