Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 31 Jul. 1919. Volga City Views column.

Hannah Eliza Cummings, wife of Francis T. Davis, was born at Danville, Vermillion Co., Ill., Nov. 28, 1842. Just one year later her parents moved to Dane Co., Wisconsin, where they lived until 1847 when they again moved and came to Iowa into a homestead in Sperry township, Clayton county. Here Mrs. Davis spent her early life, received her training and secured her education.

That she was a factor in the development of the life of the neighborhood is evidenced by the fact that she was a teacher in public school for six years.

On October 23, 1871, she was married to Francis T. Davis. After their marriage these young people lived in Elkader until 1882, when they came back to this neighborhood and bought the homestead that had been owned by Mrs. Davis's father, and made that their home.

Of her three children, Fred J., and Jennie C., and Edwin W., the first two are still among us. Fred living on the homestead owned by their father.

Mrs. Davis was a religious woman. In early life she united with the Baptist Church. To that church she was very devoted continuing her membership with it to the end. She was an ardent reader of the Bible. During the last year she read it through twice. Mrs. Davis was confined to her home during the several years of her life on account of her physical condition, never the less she was much interested in her friends and received them with much pleasure when they came to see her. While her ailment was not constant nor painful it distressed her and she looked upon her going out as a relief. Almost the last words she spoke were a expression of that assurance when she said farewell to her loved ones on last Sunday morning.

She leaves besides her two children named above seven grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, a number of nephews and nieces.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and interment was at Hill Crest Cemetery.
