Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Apr. 1919. Strawberry Point columns.

The death of Miss Mae Hurley, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Hurley, occurred Sunday noon at 12 o'clock after about two weeks illness. Her uncle, Dr. W. J. Hurley of Chicago, was sent for and upon his arrival found that appendicitis was the trouble and an operation was performed Monday, March 31. She seemed to be getting along nicely until last Friday evening when she suddenly grew worse.

Mae was born at Volga City Nov. 17, 1901, and about fourteen months ago came to this place with her parents. She was a member of the senior class and was always smiling which made her a favorite of her classmates.

All that loving hands could do had been done to stay the messenger of Death.

She was a devout Catholic with ever a prayer on her lips and her happy death was a true reflection of her past, so peaceful and so still just like the flicker of a candle and life was gone. Many friends and the class of 1919 were at the house Tuesday morning to pay their last respects to the loved one who by her gentle and amiable disposition had won their love and esteem. The remains were taken to Elkader Tuesday morning and the services conducted by Father Casey of this place, assisted by Father Taken of Elkader and Father Hetherington of Volga. The boys of her class acted as pallbearers and the Misses Fern Connor, of Strawberry Point, her favorite girl friend, Evelyn Hyde, La Vo Conboy, Fanny Orr and Anna Feeney of Elkader acted as honorary pallbearers.

Interment was made in the Elkader cemetery. Beside her sorrowing parents she leaves three sisters, Helen, Dorothy and Rita, and a host of relatives and friends. There were in attendance from our town: Dr. W. J. Hurley and the Misses Agnes, Ellen, and Anastasia Hurley, all of Chicago; Bernard Hurley of Woodbine; J. M. Hurley and daughters Marie and Viola, of Waterloo; and Stella Hurley of Volga.
