Edw. Clinton another one of our old-timers died at his home the latter part of the week after an extended illness dating over the past year. He was widely known hereabouts having resided here the greater part of his life. The funeral was held from the house, burial taking place in the Union cemetery south of town, where a large following of friends and relatives paid their last respects to their old friend and acquaintance.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 6 Mar. 1919. Littleport columns.

Edwin Elwin Clinton was born in Essex county, Vermont, on June 30, 1843, and died at Littleport, March 1, 1919, at the age of 75 years and 9 months.

Before he was out of his teens, in the critical period of our national history, the Civil War, he enlisted in a calvary regiment ___ his native state and for two years and a half offered his life in defense of the Union. He was severely wounded in a cavalry battle and all through the remainder of his life has given silent testimony of his love and loyalty to his country. This patriotism was again shown in his old age by giving his youngest boy George, to his country's service.

He came to Iowa in the early 70's working first in Dubuque county and then coming to this vicinity near Littleport. He was here married to Miss Caroline Nading, on April 7, 1874. In this neighborhood with the exception of two and one half years spent in Oklahoma, the nearly a half-century of wedded life was spent.

Eight children were born to bless this union: Mrs. Nellie Pugh, John, Charlie, Will, Fred, Earnest, who all live in this immediate vicinity, George in the 337th Machine Gun company, 88th Division, A.E.F., and Mrs. Susie Whale, of Walden, Wash.

Mr. Clinton's life was spent on a farm until 10 years ago when failing strength caused his retirement from active life. He then moved into Littleport from whence the Angel of Death called him.

The devoted wife, with 8 children, and 25 grandchildren who loved their grandfather, are left to mourn the departure of a kind father and a loving husband
