Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 27 Feb. 1919.
Matthias Rothmeyer was born at Burgan, Bayern, Germany, on December 10, 1837, and passed away February 20, 1919, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 10 days.
He grew to manhood in his native land where he served in the army from 1859 to 1865. The following year, April 26, 1866, he set sail for the United States of America. After a pleasant voyage lasting seventeen days he landed in New York, coming directly to Clayton county, where he has lived ever since.
During the first few years of his residence here he was employed in various ways but finally purchased a farm two and one half miles west of Elkader. He continued to live on this farm until April 1909 when he moved to Elkader.
On May 18, 1871, he was married to Josephine Thein. To this union were born six children: George, Catherine, Clara, (Mrs. Bernard Muench), Charles, Josephine and Ella. Both Catherine and Josephine died in childhood. The others are all living in or around Elkader. There remain also five grandchildren and other relatives and numerous friends to mourn his passing.
The funeral service was held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock from St. Joseph's church by the pastor Rev. J. P. Taken. The remains were laid to rest in St. Joseph's cemetery beside those of his wife who preceded him in death July 25, 1914.
