John Brettschneider was born Feb. 8, 1886, in Germany and died Feb. 9, 1919, at the age of 33 years, near Volga.
Deceased was married to Anna Rupeo, in Germany, on November 8, 1909, and in July 1910, the young couple came to America, first to Canada, and then to Nebraska. Here his wife died Nov. 3, 1912, leaving two small children, one son who was adopted by another family, and one daughter, Erma, who remained with her father.
In 1915 Mr. Brettschneider came to Clayton county and worked for several farmers in the county. On Jan. 20, 1915, he again married, this time to Minnie Kaja at Elkader and one child, Ralph, was born to this union.
Deceased was taken ill two weeks ago with the dread disease influenza which was promptly followed by pneumonia, and he died at 3 a.m. Sunday on the John Rinkert farm near Volga, where he was living.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his parents, five brothers, and two sisters, in the old country, besides his wife and two children.
The funeral was held Monday, February 10, at 1 p.m. from the house, Rev. C. H. Franke conducting the service. He was then brought to Elkader and laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.
