Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 Feb. 1919.

Life is a leaf of paper white,
Whereon each one of us may write,
His word or two,
and then comes night.

Lowell
--------

The poet suggests to us in the above verse that life at the longest is very brief, and this is especially true when life is brought to a close as early as in the case of Leota Kellogg, who passed away last Sunday morning at 5 o'clock.

Leota was only thirteen years of age the 29th day of last September; a school girl standing on the threshold of young womanhood, when the finger of death touched her and stayed her physical and mental development.

Last Wednesday, soon after starting to walk to Elkader, accompanied by a girl companion, Leota fell forward very heavily over an obstruction. In a little while she recovered from the shock and prosecuted her mission. She became ill soon after her return home, though not violently, and no serious results were anticipated. But the latter part of the week she grew worse and on Sunday morning passed away. Death came so suddenly and so unexpectedly that it came as a great shock to the whole community.

The deceased leaves a mother, Mrs. Geo. Scott, in sorrow over the loss; three married sisters, Mrs. Henry Nading, with whom the young woman was staying at the time of her decease; Mrs. Josie Klatt, who resides at Cartersville, Iowa; Mrs. Tressie Lenhart, Arlington, Iowa; also, Johncie, Vern, Gordie, Iona, Virginia, and Dalton, all of whom reside in Lodomillo township. The whole community extends sympathy to the grief-stricken relatives in the loss of one so young and promising.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon at the residence of the brother-in-law, Henry Nading, the service being conducted by Rev. Hull; music was provided by four young ladies of the Congregational church of Elkader, namely, the Misses, Mabel and Ruth Stebor, Miss Viola Moran and Miss Ida Wilke.

The body was born to Mederville for interment, where it was laid at rest beside the father, Alfred Kellogg, who passed away about 2 1/2 years ago.
