Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 18 Sept. 1913. Guttenberg column.
On Tuesday morning at two o'clock at his home in this city occurred the death of Mathias Purnhage, a pioneer resident of Guttenberg, the cause of his death being heart trouble. Deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, on July 29th, 1834, and therefore was 79 years, 1 month and 11 days of age at the time of his death. In the year 1867 he came to America settling first at Cassville, Wis. where he was married and coming to Guttenberg Clayton County Iowa, the same year, where he resided until his death. He was a cabinet maker by trade. He had been ailing for some time but suffered his pains and troubles with patience until the Angel of Death called him to that world where all pains and troubles are forgotten. All that loving hands and medical knowledge could suggest was done for him, and therefore he received the best of care until the end came. His death is deeply mourned by his aged widow, three sons, Henry, John and Ben Purnhage, of Guttenberg; one daughter, Mrs. F. J. Saeugling, of Guttenberg; one sister, ten grandchildren, and a large number of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon. Interment was made in the City Cemetery. Attorney Chas. E. Scholz, of this city, officiated at the funeral.
