IN MEMORIUM
Grandma Freeman
After the burden and heat of day,
While the gleam of life was all around,
A pilgrim watched for the flap of a sail
And the boat-man's voice, with its welcome sound.
Ah? he fain would carry her along
O'er the troublous waves til the voyage was o'er,
For he caught a glimpse of her lagging feet
And her wistful eyes turned t'ward the shore. He heard her whisper "The way is rough,
The banks of the river I cannot see,
But boat-man, just bear me this once across,
Where the Angel of Death awaits for me."
He lifted her gently into the bark
And bore her o'er the dark waves crest.
Life held not all for the pilgrim then,
For death brought rest - eternal rest.
