Mrs. A.D.S. Cooley
The subject of this sketch was born in Franklin, Portage county, Ohio, Dec. 10, 1842. With her parents she came to Iowa, in 1853, settling near Strawberry Point. Her life from 1853, with the exception of about six years was spent in this vicinity.

June 30, 1862 Mrs. Cooley was united in marriage to Mr. Lyman St. John Sherwood. Of this union three children were born, one dying in infancy. The happy wedded life continued until March 26, 1880, when the husband and helpmeet passed from labors to reward.

March 19, 1884, she became the wife of Mr. Gilbert Cooley whose sudden translation two and one-half years ago is still fresh in our memory. Of this union, one child, Dick M., was born.

Mrs. Cooley was a happy woman. Her life was spent in making others happy. The writer well remembers the encouraging words he received from her. Many were the times he went, in his discouraged moments, to call on "Aunt Pe" and there got a glimpse of sunshine.

Mrs. Cooley was a loyal Christian, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Strawberry Point. Though unable to attend services regularly her interest in the advancing work of the church was very manifest.

For several months her health had been failing, and yet she did not complain. Hers was not a complaining nature. Ever solicitious for the comfort and happiness of others, her soul had no time to be dissatisfied with her lot.

She passed peacefully to be with her God July 23, 1913, at her home in Chicago. The body was brought to Strawberry Point.

Beside a host of friends upon whom the fragrance of her life has distilled its sweetness there remains her boys: Wilfred B. and Gardell R. Sherwood and Dick M. Cooley; a brother W.W. Stearns; a sister M. Ella Stearns; and a niece Miss Onie Lovell.

Brief simple services were held in the Methodist church, conducted by her former pastor Rev. Will A. Piper, assisted by Rev. L.A. Bradford. Then we laid her body to rest, but the goodness and sweetness of her life we could not put away. That will live forever.

Very softly in the early evening,
Came the messenger of death,
To our dear beloved mother,
And stilled the heart and stayed the breath

Then he gently bore her upward,
To that home beyond the skies,
For her work on earth is finished
And she closed her weary eyes.

Mourn not for the dear departed,
Who has battled for the right,
She has gone to join her loved ones,
In that heavenly home of light.

We cannot understand,
The need this one to yield,
Even to the father's tender hand,
But has planned in love,
This thou shalt know sometime, somewhere.
