Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 12 June 1913. Volga City Views column.
The community was mournfully shocked Tuesday morning of last week to hear of the sudden death of Patrick Bergan.
Patrick Henry Bergan was born at Virden, Ill., May 18th, 1860. When five years of age he move, with his folks, to Clayton County, Iowa, where he resided upon a farm until, at an early age, he started out for himself, there being others to take his place at home. In the year 1892 he was united in marriage to Mayme Mae Monnahan, of Illyria township. To this union was born one daughter, Frances, of this place.
He was a man with an honest and upright character and was loved by each and every one of his many friends and relatives. It was his nature to always look on the bright side of affairs and was always cheerful in and out of his home.
After a cheerful evening he retired Monday night in his usual state of health, but, about 12 o'clock, he was taken ill and suffered but a very short time, passing from this world to a better world about 3:45 Tuesday morning, June 3, 1913, at the age of 53 years and 16 days.
He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone and indeed his kind and cheerful voice will be missed for a long, long time to come.
Mr. Bergan had recently opened up a restaurant and grocery store, his intentions being to have his family altogether, for it was always his desire to have Frances at home.
He leaves to mourn his sad death a loving wife and daughter; four brothers and two sisters, Michael, James, John and Thomas, all of this place; Mrs. C. Boland, of Elkader, and Lizzie, of this place; besides many other relatives and friends, all of whom regret his sudden departure from this world.
The funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart church Thursday morning at 10:30 and was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near. Rev. Father Hetherington preached a very nice sermon, all of which was words of praise for Mr. Bergan.
The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery. There were showers of beautiful flowers, which showed both respect and kindness from the givers.
When the good must go to rest,
And the sad ones are left alone;
We must wish for all that's best,
And think he has a better home.For as we all know God knows best,
Just which father is the best.In the golden bye and bye,
We shall meet you papa dear;
Then dear husband up on high,
We will be again so near and dear.
