Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 13 Feb. 1913. Local News columns. Condensed.
Mrs. R. M. Landon.
She was Matie Slater and was born at Dayton, Mich., February 11th, 1855. In 1872, when but 17 years of age, she graduated from Notre Dame College, at South Bend, Indiana. During the year 1873 she was united in marriage to Frank Landon. They moved to Brooklyn, Iowa; in 1881 they again moved, this time to Iroquois, S.D., where they engaged in business of general merchandising. Their next and last move was to Elkader, which took place in 1895 and which has since been their home.
To the union two children were born, May, at home, and Courtlyn at Watertown, S.D., both being present at the obsequies. Besides the Husband and two children left to mourn her departure are three grandchildren, Curtis, at home, and Anita and Mildred, of Watertown, an aged mother, Mrs. Haddon, living in Kalamazoo, Mich., and one sister, Mrs. Dr. Armstrong, of Berrien Springs, Mich.
Mrs. Landon was a faithful member of the Congregational church and the Ladies' Guild. Socially she was connected with the local lodges.
The deceased had not been in good health for several winters, having had several recurrent attacks of pneumonia, which left her very weak. During the summer she appeared to gain the lost ground. It therefore came as a surprise to many to learn of her serious illness, which lasted but one week. Of course she had not attended the store for some time, but that was a precaution against the possibility of sickness. She was suddenly stricken February 1st with a cold, which immediately developed into dread pneumonia, which caused her death Saturday morning, February 8th.
The funeral took place Tuesday from the Congregational church, Rev. R. G. Heddon officiating and speaking from her favorite theme, the 23rd Psalm. Burial took place in the East Side cemetery.
