Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 13 Feb. 1913. Local News columns.

At six o'clock this morning John J. Wertley passed away, after a long illness, aged thirty-seven years.

John J. Wertley, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Wertley, was born Feb. 5th, 1876, in Benton county, in this state, and came to Elkader with his parents while quite young. He grew to manhood here, graduating from the Elkader High School in 1891. He then worked for Brown & Bahr for three years, leaving the tinners trade and became a skilled workman. Following this he went to Chicago and attended a business college for some time and later accepted a position in the Foreman Bros. bank in that city. He worked in this bank for about fourteen years. His health became impaired several years ago and tuberculosis fastened its dread clutches upon him. About a year ago he came home and has gradually failed, until death came to end his sufferings.

He is survived by his parents, one sister, Mrs. John Bahr, of this city, and other relatives.

He was a good student in school, a favorite with both teachers and fellow pupils, and became a young man of good habits, capable and industrious in his work. He was highly regarded by his employers and held a responsible position in the Foreman Bros. Bank. His friends have sorrowed to see the bright promise of his life shadowed and then closed when it should have been approaching a rich fulfillment.

The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 o'clock at the German church, Rev. Franke officiating. Burial will be in the East Side cemetery.
