Elkader Register, Thur., 8 Aug. 1907. Osterdock column.
Mrs. Mary E. Lata, formerly Miss Mary E. Wright, of Delhi, Iowa, was born March 2nd, 1843, and died August 2nd, 1907, in the 65th year of her age, in the town of Osterdock, Iowa. On the twentieth of September, 1863, she became the wife of E. R. Latta, then a member of the Upper Iowa Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church. In her early life she espoused the cause of the meek and lowly Jesus, and never varied from the narrow path that conducts to the habitation of the angels, and of the heirs of redeeming love. She was a patient and gentle mother, and a faithful and loving wife. She was esteemed and loved by all who knew her.
The best nursing and the ablest medical aid, during her severe illness, both alike, proved unavailing. After much severe suffering, she breathed her last, as peacefully as an infant falling asleep in its mothers arms. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Guttenberg, on Sabbath, the forth instant. Not even the slightest incident occurred to mar the beauty and the solemnity of the occasion. All the arrangements were perfect in every detail.
The officiating minister, the choir, the undertaker, and the Ladies Aid, deserve more praise than can be expressed in words. Recalling the beautiful tomb , in which our beloved and lamented wife and mother now reposes, reminds us that the sexton should not go unmentioned. All the bereaved are deeply grateful to their many friends for their help and sympathy. Our darling one has gone to meet the fond embraces of her three precious children, who have preceded her, to the deathless Haven of endless peace and rest.
Besides her heart-broken husband, she leaves to mourn her, a married son, a daughter-in-law, and a sweet little granddaughter; also, an aunt, in Manchester, Iowa, a step-mother, in Rockville, Indiana, and a half-sister in Chicago. In addition to these are a host of faithful friends in Guttenberg and elsewhere.
"Asleep in Jesus - blessed sleep,
From which none ever wake, to weep."
