Elkader Register, Thur., 23 May 1907. Guttenberg column.
Mrs. Ann Downey, aged about seventy years, who had for the past four or five weeks been visiting her niece, Mrs. M. B. Needham, on Sunday afternoon about three o'clock, in descending the cellar stairs, appears to have made a misstep and fallen headforemost on the cement floor, where she was found in an unconscious state by Mrs. Needham whose attention was attracted by her groans. Dr. W. L. Duffin, who was immediately summoned, discovered no visible or internal injuries other than concussion of the brain. She lingered in a semi-conscious state until seven o'clock Monday morning, when she passed away.
Mrs. Downey was born in Queens county, Ireland, and came to America in 18__. A year later she married Richard Downey at Elkport. They lived on a farm in the Irish Settlement near Clayton Center until her husband died several years ago.
Funeral services were held at Garnavillo Tuesday morning in the Catholic church by Father Raedler. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery.
