Elkader Register, Thur., 16 May 1907.

Monday afternoon a telephone message announced that Amelia, a daughter of Peter Broell, of Cox Creek twp., had shot herself. Coroner Beerman, of Guttenberg, was notified and being unable to come deputized Justice M. Fitzpatrick to act in his place.

Mr. Fitzpatrick drove to the Broell home that afternoon and empaneled a jury consisting of Wm. Witt, Fred Heiden and Chas. Dohrer. The jury returned a verdict of suicide in accordance with the following facts.

When last seen alive at 11 a.m., Monday, by her father, the young lady was preparing dinner. The father returned to the field to work and coming home shortly before noon she was missed from the kitchen and on search being made her dead body, with a bullet hole in the forehead, was found on a bed in the second story of the house. From the appearance of the body it is thought that she placed the rifle, a .32 caliber, against her forehead and pulled the trigger, the body falling back on the bed. Death evidently was instantaneous.

The unfortunate young lady was about 26 years of age, and last winter lost a sister by death. Since that time she has been despondent and has several times remarked to others that she wished that she was dead. It is a sad case and her untimely death is a great shock to her mourning friends.

Deceased was born Jan. 21st, 1881, in Cox Creek twp. She is survived by her father, three sisters, Mrs. Hannah Breitsprecher, Mrs. Lizzie Mentzel and Mrs. Emma Maier, and one brother, John Broell.

The funeral was held at the German church at Elkader yesterday morning, conducted by Rev. F. Leonhart, and was attended by the many friends and neighbors of the bereaved family. The interment was in the East Side cemetery.
