Elkader Register, Thur., 21 Mar. 1907.
At the home of her parents in Boardman township March 15, 1907, after many months of suffering, the spirit of Bertha Opitz passed out upon the unknown seas whose waves wash the shores of eternity.
Miss Opitz was born July 4, 1884, therefore being 23 years, 8 months and 11 days when death overtook her. Her days were all spent at the home of her parents four miles west of Elkader. She received her education at the country school and at the Elkader High School.
Deceased was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Opitz and leaves to mourn her sad departure a broken hearted father and mother, two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Henry Thillen of Boardman, Max, of Elkader, Richard and Emma at home, while two sisters preceded her to the other world. On account of her general ill health the heart of the home was centered on her. In life she was passionately fond of flowers and in death was buried in a bed of the choicest blossoms. She was faithful to her loved ones and loyal to her friends, and will be missed and mourned by the entire community in which she lived. It is an abiding consolation to those who are left to know that during her long and painful illness fraught with deepest suffering and which held out no hope for recovery that she had all the attention that willing hands could give and loving hearts suggest. On the noon day of her life the night of death has fallen and the curtain of silence hangs before the future, can there be no bright land where the stern mandates of disease and death cannot enter, where there will be no tearful parting at the mysterious border land.
The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Monday afternoon, Rev. Leonhard and Rev. Hock officiating, interment being made in the East Side cemetery.
We miss thee from our home, dear,
We miss thee from thy place.
A shadow o'er our life is cast,
We miss the sunshine of thy face.
We miss thy kind and willing hand,
Thy fond and earnest care.
Our home is dark without Thee,
We miss thee everywhere.
