Elkader Register, Thur., 28 Feb. 1907. Volga City Views column.

Alf Tenney was born in the state of Ohio, Dec. 6th, 1839, and died on his farm in Sperry twp., Clayton county, Iowa, Feb. 24th, 1907. Mr. Tenney's father died in Ohio, leaving the widow and six children. In the early fifties the widow moved to West Union, Iowa, with her children. Mr. Tenney worked hard in his boyhood days, helping his mother support the family. He learned the machinist and stationary engine trade and was a successful man at his trade. In the early sixties he moved to Volga City, forty years ago Feb. 5th, and was married to Polly Ann Chapman, who survives him. To this union three children were born, Carrie, Mrs. A. W. Lee, of Britt, Iowa, Blanche, Mrs. W. E. White, of Volga, and Eva, Mrs. Thomas Conboy, of Volga, and six grandchildren. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Kate Morse, of Volga, Mrs. Clara Berkley and Mrs. Ann Bishop, of West Union, Mrs. Hannah Fugett, of Wisconsin, and one brother, Elisha Tenney. Forty years ago he purchased a farm in Sperry twp. and has lived there continuously ever since. He was a man that always followed the Golden Rule. A good husband, a kind and loving father, and a grandfather that the little ones will miss, no one knows only those who have had a dear old grandfather to love. Last Friday night I saw him with his little granddaughter sitting by his side going out to Gamps, so happy and contented. Little did we think that it was her last ride to the farm with grandpa. A good neighbor, good to all his fellow men and a man without an enemy, a kind word and a smile for all and one of God's noblest works, an honest man. The daughter from the west came to lay away one who was to her not only father, but friend, most loyal and devoted. The funeral was held in the M.E. church at Volga on Feb. 26th, 1907, burial in the Volga cemetery. Among those from out of town in attendance were Mrs. Andy Bock, of Waukon, Mrs. Glen White, of Elkader, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Philipps, of Arlington, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Marsh, of Strawberry Point, and Ed Smith and Mary Chapman, of Elgin, and his two sisters of West Union.
