Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 Jan. 1916. Monona column.
John Lestina, Jr., who was so well known in this locality - as an honest, upright, most generous hearted youth of 25 summers, succumbed on December 28th to the dread pneumonia only after a brief illness of three days. John, who was hauling cream, made his last trip on the 21st, having then a light attack of grippe, although his strong constitution kept him up. He was under Dr. Everall's care, who detected pneumonia on the 26th, which they both fought desperately until death came on December 28th at 5 o'clock p.m. Had he lived, his next birthday February 11th, would have found him 26 years old. Johnnie followed his mother to the great beyond by only four short months and one day. He leaves to mourn his untimely death an aged father, three brothers and one sister; Fred, George and Barbara, at home, Charles, residing on his farm in Madison County, New York. The funeral in charge of W. C. Kruse, was conducted from the house on December 31st at 9:30 a.m. and at the St. Vacalay Catholic Church, where Father Hogan said high mass. Burial in the Catholic cemetery* of that place.
