Mrs. D. R. Mills died at her home in Ashland, Oregon, Monday afternoon, April 3rd, after an illness of long duration. She was the widow of D. R. Mills, known throughout this region as a business man and banker. Deceased was seventy-six years old the 26th of last December.
Sarah Frances Matthews, daughter of Ransom and Tracia Mathews, was born in Cleveland, Oswego county, N.Y., December 26th, 1839. She lived there until the age of thirteen years when her mother died. Soon after, with her father, she moved to Elkader, Clayton county, Iowa. She went to school there a few years and then taught.
June 26th, 1861, she was married to D. R. Mills. The following October Mr. and Mrs. Mills started for Nebraska Territory. In 1869 they returned to Elkader, where they made their home until July, 1886, when they moved to Ashland.
Mrs. Mills was the mother of two children, both boys.Ernest Verni Mills died March 30th, 1897, aged thirty-three years and six months; Charles Delos Mills died March 17th, 1886, aged eighteen years.
One grandson, Victor Mills, survives.
Mrs. Mills was one of God's noble women, a devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor, a true friend. During her years of life in Elkader she was prominent in church and social work and in Ashland she occupied an equally high position. Her memory will live long in the hearts of all who knew her.
The funeral services were from the home in Ashland, Wednesday, April 5th, Rev. Farquhar officiating.
