Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 7 Dec. 1916.

Mrs. Verna (Sherman) Hagensick, wife of Martin G. Hagensick, died at her home in Elkader, Wednesday, December 6th, 1916, at 3:28 p.m.

Deceased was 26 years, 11 months and 10 days old at the time of her death, having been born in Lodomillo township, near Edgewood, on December 29th, 1889.

She was a daughter of George S. Sherman and Ida (Easton) Sherman, and was one of a family of seven children, namely: H. E., I. F., Elmer, Byran, Myrtle and Letha, all of whom survive her, with the bereaved husband and babe of nine months.

She attended and graduated from the Edgewood high school, attended the State Normal School at Cedar Falls and the Upper Iowa University at Fayette. For four years thereafter she taught school, one year in the Elkader schools.

On June 17th, 1914, she was married to Martin G. Hagensick, clerk of the district court of Clayton County. The one child, now nine months old, is the issue of this union.

This is a peculiarly sad ending of a most happy young life and the husband, parents, sisters and brothers, as well as a host of friends, feel their loss most keenly. Mrs. Hagensick was a sufferer from cancer and in the past year sought relief at Rochester, Minn., Chicago and Detroit, Mich., receiving little or no encouragement from the best of specialists obtainable. Her last days were spent in patient resignation, trusting in the Father whose wisdom and whose ways are best, even though human understanding cannot always comprehend His acts. She was a member of the German Lutheran Church of Elkader and had always been identified with that church, having been baptized in its faith.

In the social life of Elkader she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Coterie, both of which organizations will feel her loss keenly.

The funeral is to be held at ten o'clock a.m. Saturday, December 9th, in the German Lutheran Church of Elkader, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment will be in the Edgewood cemetery at Edgewood.
