Dwain "Bud" Hess, 75, of Guttenberg died Monday, July 6, 1998 at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Gregory Eilers.
Burial will be in the Guttenberg City Cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers are members of American Legion Post #373. Honorary bearers are Donald Sadewasser, Louis Kochendorfer, Jack Meder, Paul Dale Dickson, Paul Zhiss and Tom Hefel.
Visitation was set for 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home in Guttenberg and at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Dwain Franklin Hess was born Dec. 8, 1922 at rural Holy Cross, the son of Joseph and Bertha (Saylor) Hess. He grew up in North Buena Vista and was baptized in the Catholic faith.
He enlisted in the Avenger Squadron of the U.S. Navy on June 7, 1942 (six months to the day and hour after Pearl Harbor), and served until Dec. 3, 1945. He fought in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters, in Guadalcanal and North Africa.
On June 30, 1948 he married Charlene Elsie Louise Thiese at Guttenberg. They were the parents of four children.
In 1949 he began employment for the City of Guttenberg as the city electrician, retiring in 1985 after 36 years. Following his retirement he was elected to the City Park Board, a post he held until his death.
He was an active member of the American Legion, a member of the NRA and the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many hours hunting, fishing and golfing with his friends.
Survivors include a son, John (and Deb) Hess of Guttenberg, two daughters, Linda Solomon of Guttenberg, and Lorna (and Billy) Thomas of Rockledge, Fla.; five grandchildren, Tony and Jody Hess, Eric and Audra Solomon, Dustin Thomas and Ashley Hess; a sister, Suzetta Garrison of Los Angeles, Calif., and a brother, Joseph (and Anna) Hess, of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin siblings; his wife, Charlene, on June 23, 1979; a son, David, on Dec. 19, 1989; and an infant grandson, Brian Hess.
