Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 26 Oct. 1916.

Mrs. Sarah Jane Atwood passed away last Thursday, October 19th, at 11:20 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Youtsch, at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 4 days. Death was due to her advanced age.

Sarah Jane Patterson, daughter of John and Jane Patterson, was born near Carey, Wyandotte county, Ohio, January 15th, 1831, being one of a family of ten children, seven boys and three girls. She came with her parents to Iowa when a very young girl, and there being no railroads, the journey was made by team and took many days. Being one of the early settlers of this county, she knew and bore her share of the trials and hardships of those early settlers, and has watched the growth of our county to its new prosperous state. The family came at once to Clayton County, settling on a farm in Wagner township, and this was her home during her girlhood. She had the distinction of being the one who taught the first school in Wagner township, the school being held in a little log schoolhouse near where the schoolhouse in Section 30 now stands.

On January 1st, 1852, she was united in marriage with Alexander B. Atwood, he, too, being an early settler, coming to this country from New Hampshire in 1840, and when the Mexican war broke out he enlisted as a member of Co. H, 16th U.S. Infantry, serving until he was honorably discharged therefrom in 1848 on account of a gunshot wound. This young couple began housekeeping on a farm in Boardman Grove, and there reared their family of six children, one, a son, Phares, dying at the age of eight years, and two daughters, Ella, dying March 11th, 1907, and Martha, who died September 5th, 1914.

Shortly after the death of her husband on August 14th, 1891, she came to Elkader and has since made her home with her children, who have given her the best of care and attention in her declining years. During the past year or more she has had the double affliction of being both deaf and blind, but thru it all she has been cheerful and patient, always anxious to be of service to those whom she loved.

When a young girl she was baptized and united with the United Brethren Church, of which she has been a faithful member, her Christian faith manifesting itself in her daily walk of life, her ever watchful care of her loved ones, even unto the end.

She leaves to mourn, one son, Alvah Atwood, and two daughters, Althea, now Mrs. John Toutsch, and Flora, now Mrs. Al. Cook, all of Elkader, four brothers: Aaron Patterson of Carthage, S.D.; Wesley Patterson, of Waupeton, N.D.; Sam Patterson, of Fayette, Iowa, and Ezra Patterson, of West Union, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Martha Kees, of Harlan, Iowa, and also sixteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren and numerous friends,

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 22nd, at 1 o'clock in the afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Toutsch, conducted by Rev. Franke. A quartet, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Palas, Robert Schmidt and Miss Carrie Schmidt, rendered a few appropriate selections for the occasion. Interment was made in the Patterson cemetery in Wagner township.

The pall bearers were John Jungblut, Henry Jungblut, L. L. Hulverson, Richard Opitz, M. E. Munger and John Berghahn.

Those from away in attendance at the funeral were Aaron Patterson, Carthage, S.D.; Mrs. Fred Griswold and children, of Decorah, Iowa, Mrs. I. T. Hahn and son Elmer, of North McGregor, and Elver Atwood, of McGregor, Iowa.
