Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 22 Jun. 1916.

Richard Humphrey, who for many years had been a resident of this county, died Friday, June 16th, at his home in Monona, aged past 81 years.

He was born in County Limerick, Ireland, and when a young boy came with his parents to Canada where his father died, leaving a widow and five sons: Lawrence, Michael, James, Richard and Matthew, all of whom have passed away. After the death of his father the family came to Iowa and located on a farm about four miles from Monona. On June 3rd, 1867, he was united in marriage with Hannah Looney and two children were born to them, Miss Mamie, at home, from whom he received the most tender and loving care, especially during his declining years; their son, Richard V., died sixteen years ago, and about eleven years ago the wife and mother answered the final summons.

Funeral services were held in St. Patrick's church Monona, Monday morning, his pastor, Rev. Hogan, and Rev. Clune, of Postville, and Rev. Reilly, of Elkader, officiating at a solemn requiem high mass. Interment was made in the family lot in the Catholic cemetery, besides remains of his wife and son. Six nephews of the deceased acted as pall bearers, namely: James Humphrey, of Monona; Richard Humphrey, of Minneapolis; James Humphrey, of Elkader; Thomas Looney, of Postville; Peter Humphrey, of Waverly; and Louis Humphrey, of Monona. Honorary pall bearers were D. J. Murphy, of Waukon; T. J. Sullivan, of McGregor; F. J. Uriell, of Elkader; and John Killen, Thomas English and A. E. Schwab, of Monona.

Few, if any men, were more esteemed and loved by kindred, neighbors and friends, than deceased, for he was a typical American citizen and a man in the true sense of the word, and will be sadly missed by all, especially by his devoted daughter Mayme and granddaughter, Miss Marie Humphrey, of Monona.

Elkader relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. McLaughlin and son Leo, Mr. and Mrs. James Humphrey and daughter, Miss Kathryn, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Beers, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Uriell, J. K. Molumby and daughter, Miss Charlotte, P. J. Cain, Atty. W. W. Davidson, M. Regan, Miss Zelma Robbins, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Dunn, Mr. and Mrs. Clem Dunn and Thos. Dunn.

(Note: His daughter's given name was spelled both ways in the article.)
