John Christian Uecker.

John C. Uecker died at his home in Elkader on Friday evening, June 2nd, 1916, at 10:45 o'clock, of a complication of diseases, at the age of 68 years and 6 days, having been ailing about a year but was not confined to his bed until about two weeks ago.

He was born at Goerke, Germany, on May 26th, 1848, and was married at Liebgartien, Germany, on April 17th, 1874, to Elwine Buenting. Two sons and three daughters were born to this union, viz: Chas. H. Uecker, of Delmont, S.D.; Bertha, now Mrs. Frank Meyer, of Nunica, Mich.; Anna, now Mrs. Geo. Lembke, of Read township; Hattie, now Mrs. Phillip Cords, of Crookston, Minn.; and Frank Uecker, of Cottonwood, Minn. He is also survived by four brothers, Fred Uecker, of Canastota, S.D.; Chas. Uecker, of Huron, S.D.; Henry Uecker, of Germany; and Aug. Uecker, of Elkader, Iowa, his wife and eighteen grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Uecker came to America on April 22nd, 1883, and located on a rented farm near Clayton Center and lived there for some time, then moved to what is known as the Dohrer farm in Cox Creek township, where they lived for three years and then moved onto the Michael Regan farm, in Boardman township, which they afterwards purchased, and which was their home until 1910, when they purchased their pleasant home on High street.

Mr. Uecker was a soldier in the German army and served his country in the German-French war of 1870-1971, being in the army three years and in active service one year.

Deceased was a member of the Ev. Frieden's Church of this place and also of the Brotherhood of American Yeomen.

The funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 6th, 1916, at 2:00 p.m., at the German Ev. Frieden's Church, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating, with interment in the East Side cemetery.

The pall bearers were Henry Gossman, Wm. Patow, Jacob Eggiman, Albert Storbeck, L. L. Hulverson and Geo. Ehrhardt.
