Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 1 June 1916. Strawberry Point columns.

Wm. Schurmann was born in Germany, September 19th, 1849. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Schurmann. At the age of five years he came across the ocean with his parents, sisters and brothers and they settled down at Cedar Creek, Clayton County, Iowa. He was the youngest of the family of fourteen, all of whom have passed to the Great Beyond excepting a brother Fred, living in Sauk Center, Minn., a sister, Mrs. Roehling, of Mill Rose, Minn., and a sister, Mrs. Voss, of Minn. On February 18th, 1873, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Marie Amling. To this union thirteen children were born, three of whom preceded the parents in death. On December 15th, 1913, the mother was called Home and was laid to rest in the cemetery at Strawberry Point. On January 14th, 1915, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Louisa Wendt, who survives him; also the following children: John, of Edgewood; Frank, of Delhi; Edward, Louis and Joseph, of Strawberry Point; Gustav, of Edgewood; Mrs. Eleanore Smith, of Edgewood; Mrs. Lizzie Garrett, of Santa Monica, Cal.; Mrs. Anna Hall, of Lamont; Mrs. Wilhelmina Copeland, of Ames, and eight grandchildren mourn the loss of a loving grandfather. On Monday, May 15th, Mr. Schurmann made a business trip to Edgewood and was taken to the home of his son John in an unconscious condition. He began to rally somewhat so as to regain consciousness enough so that he could recognize the different members of his family on Friday and Saturday forenoon but God had willed otherwise and he grew worse on Saturday afternoon and passed away on Monday at 5:40 p.m. at the home of his son John at Edgewood where everything possible was done to alleviate his great suffering. Father Casey attended to his spiritual wants and he died with the blessed Crucifix in his hand when the Silent Reaper cut the line between life and death. His family lived with each other to do those many acts of love and kindness which loving children can do for a loving parent. His age at the time of departure was 66 years, 8 months and 3 days. May he rest in peace.
