Marie Sophia Hamann was born in Grassloosch, Ludwigsluss, M. S. on February 16th, 1857, and died at her home in Garnavillo on July 10th, 1916. In 1871 she came to America, where in 1873 she was united in marriage to Franz Harnack, of Garnavillo. Eight children blessed this union, four dying in infancy. On January 25th, 1908, the beloved husband died, and on July 14th of the same year their oldest son, Bernhardt, passed away. The deceased had been ailing since last winter and for the past three months she was confined to her bed. She was an active member of St. Paul's Ladies Aid Society, members of which assisted in caring for her during her illness. Her death is mourned by the remaining three children, Mrs. Lydia Ihde, of Garnavillo; Mrs. Emma Hahn, of Whittemore; and Gustave, of Manly. The funeral was held on Thursday, Rev. Braun officiating. Interment was in the new cemetery.
