On Friday, Jan 31st, 1896, the angel of death invaded the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Downey, of this place, and called away their little daughter Blanche.
She was born April 5th, 1888, and was nearly eight years of age at her death, which resulted from complication of grippe and whooping cough.
Sad are the hearts that are called to part with their children, but we can hope that it is thought best by Him who is gathering to Himself the "bright jewels". Our sympathy goes out to the suffering parents. The funeral was held Saturday last, Rev. Father Reiley officiating.
~Elkader Register, Friday, February 7, 1896
Notes: Parents were John Downey & Rose Hogan. Rose's obituary: "...services at St. Joseph's church, were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery beside her two daughters, who had gone before." Blanche's deceased sister was Stella who had died in 1894.
