Mrs. J. A. Bernhard died at her home in Giard, Friday, March 10th, 1911, after an illness of several months. Catherine Rosenkranz was born in Germany, Dec. 25, 1843, and with her parents came to America about 1860, locating on a farm in Mendon township. In 1863 she was united in marriage to John A. Bernhard,, who preceded her to the grave in 1888. For nearly fifty years Mrs. Bernhard has been a resident of Giard. She was the mother of nine children, one dying in infancy. The eight surviving are: August and Arthur, of South Dakota; Mrs. Geo. Sampson, of Colesburg; Mrs. C. Becker, of Burt, Iowa; Mrs. W. J. Allert, John H., Wm. and Catherine, of this township. Mrs. Bernhard was a Christian, neighborly woman, and will not only be missed by her children but by the entire community of which she has been so long a resident. Funeral services were held from her late residence and M.E. church, Monday, conducted by Rev. Gauger, interment in Giard cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is with the family in their bereavement.
