Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 23 Feb. 1911.

Mary Berns was born in Jefferson township Sept. 16th, 1851, and died at her home in Volga township Saturday morning, Feb. 18, at 8:00 o'clock, after a short illness, aged 59 years, 5 months and 2 days.

She was married in 1869, at Garnavillo, to John Berse, and the same year they moved to McGregor, where they lived for six years, moving to Dubuque in 1865. They made Dubuque their home for five years and in 1881 moved to Volga township, which was their home until their death. Mr. Berse departing this life in 1902.

Nine children were born to this union, five preceding their mother in death, viz: Mrs. Mary Behrens, Mrs. Molly Schmill, Frank, Theodore and Amelia. The four living are: Mrs. Anna Behrens, of Oelwein; and John, Edward and Katie at home. She also leaves four brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning, services being in the Catholic church at Elkport and interment in the Elkport cemetery.
