Peter Berns, Sr., who for many years has made his home with his son Frank, passed away on Saturday morning, February 4th, after an illness of but a few days. Deceased was born in R_chlingshausen, Munster, Prussia, Dec. 6th, 1824. He came to America in 1848, settling on a farm in Jefferson township. He remained here but a short time when he purchased the farm now occupied by his son Frank, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. In the year 1849 he was married to Mary Dortland. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom survive. They are: Peter, Theodore, Henry, Mrs. Mary (either Bersa or Berse) and Mrs. Annie Sheffert, of Volga township, and Frank, of Garnavillo. Herman died in Oklahoma in 1900 and Tillie passed away in 1895. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Church on Monday morning, Father Raedler officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Catholic Cemetery.
