Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 27 Apr. 1911.

David Mitchell was born in Clayton County, Iowa, Dec. 30, 1848. His life was spent on the farm. December 31, 1879, Mr. Mitchell was united in marriage to Miss Emma Speed. The domestic life was pleasant and happy. Of this union was born four children, all of whom survive the father's departure. Mr. Mitchell has lived in Clayton County nearly his entire life, a short time being spent in Fayette County. For 21 years Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell lived on their farm about 6 miles northwest of town. Three years ago they moved to Strawberry Point to spend their remaining years in enjoying the fruits of the years of toil and struggle. About a year ago his health began to fail, but at times he seemed to regain his wonted strength and vigor. The latter part of October, however, Mr. Mitchell was seized with what proved to be an incurable malady. The past six weeks he was confined to his bed. It did not appear that Mr. Mitchell was conscious of the pain he suffered. For the greater part of the past six weeks he was in a sort of stupor. But from Saturday last until the end came, early Tuesday morning, he suffered intensely. There are left to survive the loving wife and children. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the home, Rev. Piper having charge. The quartet rendered three comforting hymns. The M.W.A. acted as an escort and body guard. At the cemetery they held the last rites over the body.
