Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 11 May 1911.

At her home in this city Thursday morning at 3 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. M. E. Munger, Sr., aged 91 years, 1 month and 4 days.

Jane Maria Glazier was born in Warsaw, Wyoming County, N.Y., April 1, 1820, one of a family of 8 children, who were born to Simeon and Katie Glazier and a twin of Jeanette Kezieh Glazier, who died in her infancy. Her early life was spent in her home in Warsaw, where she received the advantages of a common school and academic education. Aug. 20, 1838 she was united in marriage to Milo Enos Munger, who was also born and raised in Warsaw. About 1840 they emigrated to Crawford county, Pennsylvania, locating on a farm near Conniautville. To this union ten children were born, all of whom are living except Eugene B., who died July 2nd, 1897, and one who died in infancy. In May, 1866, the family came to Iowa and purchased a farm in Read township, Clayton county, where they resided until March 1886, when they sold the farm and moved to Elkader, purchasing the present home. On Aug. 20th, 1888, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, surrounded by their children and grandchildren, which was a very happy family gathering. Feb. 20th, 1898, after almost 60 years of married life, the father and husband was called away. Since that time she has continued to reside on the homestead where she received the care a kind and devoted mother should receive.

She was a member of the local chapter Eastern Star and until declining years prevented her from attending she enjoyed the meetings very much and always had a kind word for the members of the order, who treated her in her declining years with so much courtesy and respect. She had been a lifelong member of the Methodist church until recently, when on account of the class breaking up, she transferred her membership to the First Congregational church of Elkader, where she was a member at the time of her death.

Deceased had been failing for the past two years and confined to her bed most of the time for the past 6 months, but for one who had passed the four score years and ten, retained her faculties to a remarkable degree. All that loving hands and kind care could do was done to alleviate the suffering of a dear mother and make easy the last hours of one, whose life was always devoted to her family. Eight children remain to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, whose names are: Geo. W., of Elkader, who has always lived at home; Fred W., of Rolla, Mo.; Eben R., of Edgewood; S. R., of Oelwein; Mrs. Amelia Cassidy, of Elkader; Mrs. Mary Gifford, of Farmersburg; Milo E., Jr., of Elkader; and Mrs. Carrie White, of Volga City. Besides the children there are 47 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, making 96 descendants.

Mrs. Munger was best known for her goodness and Christian charity, and the influence of a life so well spent in the Master's vineyard cannot easily be forgotten, but will continue to make itself felt amongst those who knew her only to love her. Her memory will be cherished and doubtless be the medium by which lives will be strengthened in His name.

The funeral took place Sunday afternoon with scripture and prayer at the residence and service at the Congregational church, Rev. R. G. Heddon officiating, assisted by Rev. Franke, pastor of the German Lutheran church, the Eastern Star conducting the ritualistic service at the grave, prayers and benediction by the pastors. Interment in the East Side cemetery.
