---- ---- ----

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 4 May 1911.

Christian Plagman was born May 26, 1836, near Goldberg, Mechlenburg, Schwerin, Germany, and died at his home in Elkport, Iowa, at 2:30 a.m., Sunday, April 23rd, 1911, at the age of 74 years, 10 mos., 27 days. On Oct. 6th, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Wilhelmine Sunbold, in Germany, and with his young bride came to America, to his uncle, Mr. Joachim Ortman, near Bear Creek, Clayton Co., Ia. He worked about 2 years for Martin Garber, and then purchased a farm near Elkport and remained on the same, toiling early and late to make a pleasant home for his wife and children. On Nov. 8, 1882, she who had been a true helpmate and comfort to him, was called to that realm where we must all go sooner or later. To them were born 11 children, 5 of whom have long since passed away. The living are Henry, of Elkport, Ia.; Mrs. Anna Witt, of Edgewood; William, of Guttenberg; Mrs. Emma Sevey, of Edgewood; Charles, on the old Plagman homestead on Bear Creek; and Mrs. Marie Williams, of Masonville.

In December, 1883, he was married to Mrs. Dorothea Rath, nee Lindmann, thus bringing him four step-children, as follows, Mrs. Clara Ahrens, of Dundee, Ia.; Mrs. Augusta Schnack, of Elkport, Ia.; Carl Rath, of Earlville, Ia.; and Mrs. Marie Preussner, of Dundee, Ia. They remained on the farm until in 1907, when he and his wife bought a comfortable home in Elkport and retired from hard labor.

He caught a severe cold and was obliged to call on a physician for medicine. He got along nicely, but suffered a relapse and after three weeks of suffering, he finally gave up the battle for life.

His children were at his bedside constantly the last week and with loving tenderness and fondest care they still hoped that his wish to be spared a few more years of life, might be granted. But God willed it otherwise and they, who had hoped to live quietly in their newly-acquired town home, were to be parted. What a consolation that it is only for a time. Some day we'll all be gathered home.

The funeral was held on Tuesday, April 25th, and was very largely attended. Rev. Linnenbuerger, his pastor, conducted the services; and the flower covered casket with his remains was placed in a vault in the Lutheran cemetery.

The church has lost a good member; the wife, a devoted husband; the children a loving father; the neighbors a good friend; the 20 grandchildren a kind grandparent.
