Lemuel Epps, born in Gibson county, Indiana, October 19th, 1843, died at Volga, Iowa, August 20th, 1911, aged sixty-seven years, ten months and one day. When about twenty-one years of age he was received into full membership of the free Baptist church, where for many years he labored as teacher in the Sabbath school. In 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Tripp. Their union was blessed with ten children, six boys and four girls, five of whom survive him. Those living are Oscar, of Willow Lake, S.D.; James, of Dubuque, Ia.; and Frank, Harold and Anna, of Volga. For about ten years of their wedded life Mr. and Mrs. Epps lived on the farm, after which they removed to Volga, where they have lived continuously since. Mr. Epps was a laborer by occupation and has engaged at various work until about a year ago, when he found it necessary to retire from the more active services of a day laborer and seek lighter employment. Coming from one of those grand old eastern families, Mr. Epps was one of fourteen children. Five of these survive him, three brothers and two sisters. Besides those already mentioned Mr. Epps is mourned by his life companion and helpmate, his beloved wife, who has so faithfully stood by his side through all the years.
