Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Aug. 1911.
After an illness of about four months, John F. Becker passed away Monday evening, August 7th, at his home in Volga.
He was born April 27th, 1850, in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. When nineteen years of age he came to this country with his parents, his brothers and a sister, and settled on a farm near Volga, where he made his home until about five years ago, when he retired from the active farm labors and moved into the town.
In 1875 he was married to Miss Charlotte Brabant, who survives him. Twelve children came to them, nine of whom are still living. They are Ewald, Carl and Lena, of Volga; Lizzie and August, of Waterloo; Albert, of Granger, Wash.; Herman, of Akley, Minn.; Hulda, of Strawberry Point; and John, of Elkader. He also leaves three brothers, Gus, Charles and Fred, of Oldham, S.D.; and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Walter, of Elkader, and fifteen grandchildren, together with a numerous list of friends and neighbors.
Mr. Becker was a kind neighbor, well liked by those who knew him. He was always willing to extend a helping hand to those who came to him in need or trouble. During his last illness he was a patient sufferer, bearing his pain without complaint.
He was a member of the Modern Woodmen, having been a charter member of the Osborne lodge, but he transferred to the Volga lodge when he left the old farm.
The funeral services were held at the home in Volga Wednesday morning at ten o'clock, Rev. Franke, of Elkader, officiating, after which he was brought to Elkader and laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.
Many beautiful floral tributes were received from the Woodmen, the Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian church and other friends.
