Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 6 July 1911.
Joseph Hennes was killed in the partial wreck of the C.M. & St. P. passenger train of which he was the fireman, on June 27th, near Bardwell, Wis. A message of the sad accident was received here that night by his brother John, who immediately went to McGregor by automobile and then on to the scene of the wreck, returning with the remains on a special train, which reached here about 5:30 on Friday morning.
Joe was born on a farm in this township about two miles north of Elkader, October 16, 1877, and grew to young manhood in this vicinity. About ten years ago he entered the employ of the C.M & St.P. Ry. Co., as a fireman and was promoted to the position of engineer about four years ago.
Joe had never married but had made for himself a wide circle of friends who mourn his untimely death. Between thirty and forty railroad men and their ladies came in on the special to show their love and friendship for their departed comrade.
The funeral services were held on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's church, Rev. Father Raedler, of Garnavillo, officiating, as Rev. Father Reilly was out of town. He was then laid to rest in St. Joseph's cemetery. Many beautiful floral offerings expressed the regard and sympathy of a host of friends.
